Top Questions from Our Obituary Webinar—Answered by the Experts

April 21, 2025

We were flooded with questions during and after our recent Tribute Technology webinar, Why Obituaries Should Be Your #1 Focus This Year. The session explored a powerful shift in how obituary pages can drive long-term value—and introduced a new opportunity: Tribute Technology’s partnership with Chptr, a company that broadcasts death notices on local TV as part of nightly news segments.

Joining us live was Chptr’s Founder and CEO, Rehan Choudhry, who helped funeral professionals understand how this partnership—and the new Tribute Spotlights offering—can strengthen their brand, serve families better, and reconnect with their communities in a meaningful way.

If you missed the webinar, you can watch it here. We’ve also rounded up the top questions from attendees—along with expert answers—to help you quickly get up to speed.

1. Can Tribute Spotlights video announcements be shared on our funeral home’s YouTube channel?

Absolutely. Both the funeral home and the family receive the finished video, which means you can post it to YouTube, add it to your website, or share it across your social media channels. It’s an easy, shareable way to extend the obituary’s reach.

2. Are some funeral homes paying for the service themselves to grow market share?

Yes—and they’re seeing it as a smart investment. Many funeral homes are covering the cost of Tribute Spotlights to differentiate themselves in a crowded market. It’s an added-value service that leaves a lasting impression with families and builds long-term brand recognition in the community.

3. Is it broadcast over-the-air (OTA) and on linear TV?

Yes, in most markets. Death announcements air on both:

  • Over-the-air (OTA): Free, local channels accessible via antenna
  • Linear TV: Scheduled programming via cable or satellite

This dual approach ensures maximum exposure, especially for audiences that may not use streaming platforms.

4. Are Tribute Spotlights videos only on-air, or are they also online?

Both. Announcements are featured during designated TV broadcast times and published on the station’s memorials webpage, offering families and communities multiple ways to engage.

5. How long are the videos?

Each segment is 30 seconds, with individual obituaries typically receiving 3–5 seconds per airing.

6. Does Tribute Spotlights work with CFS websites or only Tribute sites?

Tribute Spotlights integrate with all website platforms—including CFS—so you don’t need to change your provider to take advantage of this service.

7. How do families know when and where to watch the broadcast?

Each participating market has set channels and air times. Your funeral home will receive all the relevant details, so you can easily pass them along to the families you serve.

8. If we have multiple obituaries, do they split the 30-second segment?

Yes. If you submit four obituaries, for example, each typically receives around 7 seconds. In some markets, your funeral home may even qualify for exclusive broadcast segments.

9. Who owns the obituary video?

You and the family do. Both parties receive copies with full rights to use, post, or share the video however they’d like.

10. Does each announcement get a full 30 seconds?

No, but frequency matters. Each announcement usually gets 3–5 seconds, and they’re aired multiple times—often 10 or more—to maximize reach and visibility.

11. Can we get reporting from the local station?

Yes. Tribute Spotlights and Chptr provide pre- and post-airing reports with full analytics, so you can track performance, exposure, and community impact.

12. What’s the average cost per TV spot?

Thanks to Tribute Technology’s negotiated pricing, the full announcement package—which includes TV broadcast, video production, and social media distribution—is just $225 on average. Volume discounts are available for funeral homes bundling multiple announcements.

Waunakee, Wisconsin – October 22, 2025 Tribute Technology is partnering with Homesteaders Life Company, one of the most trusted names in funeral service, to make it easier for funeral homes to manage preneed policies. The planned integration, coming in 2026, will connect Homesteaders’ policy data directly with Tribute Management Software, allowing funeral directors to see and link matching preneed policies right from a case. Policy information will update automatically each night, so directors always have the most current details without sorting through paperwork or entering data twice. “At Homesteaders, we’re committed to offering financial support, expertise, and partnerships that bring value to funeral professionals and the families we serve together,” said Steve Shaffer, Homesteaders President, CEO and Board Chair. “This planned integration with Tribute Technology helps simplifies the preneed management process, giving funeral providers easier access to the information they need so they can focus more fully on designing meaningful experiences for the families they serve.” For funeral homes, this will mean fewer errors, faster workflows, and peace of mind knowing every available fund is captured and applied correctly. Families will benefit too, with less back-and-forth over documents and a smoother, more professional experience. “Funeral directors carry an enormous responsibility, and every minute spent searching for paperwork is a minute taken away from serving families,” said Courtney Gould Miller, President of Commercial Markets at Tribute Technology. “This upcoming integration with Homesteaders takes something complex and makes it simple. It’s about giving time back to the professionals who give so much of themselves every day.” This is the first of several planned integrations designed to connect Tribute Management Software with multiple preneed partners. Tribute Technology Releases Landmark Obituary Study: Traffic, Engagement, and Industry Threats New research shows organic obituary traffic surging, aggregators taking sessions and revenue, and Tribute-powered pages winning top Google rankings WAUNAKEE, Wis., Oct. 6, 2025 — Tribute Technology announced the publication of Benchmarking the Modern Obituary: Traffic, Engagement, and Industry Threats , an analysis of more than one billion obituary sessions. The report shows how online obituaries fuel funeral home growth, where traffic originates, and how third-party aggregators divert audiences and purchases away from local firms. “Obituaries are the entry point to the modern funeral home,” said Craig Greenseid, CEO of Tribute Technology. “This study gives owners the data to protect that entry point, so families, condolences, brand awareness, and commerce stay with the firm that served them.” Obituaries are the top driver of funeral home website traffic, attracting more than 3.5 billion visits annually, with obituary pages drawing five times more visits than all other pages. Sixty percent of visitors are women over age 50, most within 25 miles of the funeral home, aligning with the primary pre-need decision-maker demographic. When it comes to obituaries, the study shows speed and substance matter. Obituaries posted within two days of death drive 30 percent more visits and engagements, while those with 500 or more words generate twice as many. The study confirms that 75 percent of obituary visits come from organic search or social sharing and underscores SEO-first design, especially on obituaries. This helps ensure families find their funeral home directly rather than an aggregator sites, which divert traffic and dollars. Funeral homes lose up to 260 sessions per obituary, reducing revenue, guestbook entries, and brand equity. “Funeral homes want confidence that families will find obituaries on their own website, not an aggregator, and that once they land on that obituary, it drives the engagements, such as condolence messages or traffic to the other pages on the funeral home website.” said Andy Bourke, Chief Digital Officer at Tribute Technology. “Our platform is engineered to rank well, and we are always improving it. That keeps the conversation where it belongs and strengthens long-term family relationships.” The study also notes that while AI assistants such as ChatGPT are growing, Google Search dominates with 150 billion monthly visits compared to ChatGPT’s 4 billion. Tribute Technology uses proven SEO structures and schema to ensure obituaries remain visible across both traditional and AI-driven search. Finally, the report details the decline of print obituaries and growth of digital memorialization. Digital postings now account for 65 percent of death notices. Tribute Technology is expanding digital distribution through partnerships like Tribute Spotlights with Chptr, which brings obituaries to local television audiences.
