SEO Tips to Improve Your Website

March 20, 2024

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for a few years, you’ve probably heard of Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

Maybe you’ve blown it off because you don’t think it’s important for a funeral home website.

The goal of SEO is to make it easier for families to find your funeral home when they search for related terms.

For funeral homes, SEO is essential. You need to appear in local search results when people in your area search for terms like "funeral home near me.” According to our Google-certified search experts, this is one of the most searched phrases.

If you do not consider SEO, you may be losing calls! Below are a few tips to help you get started.

  • Pick the Right Keywords

When choosing the keywords that you believe to be the most effective, you want to pick (and use) keywords that benefit you. Think about what a family without any knowledge about funeral service might search for and go from there.

Which phrases and words are they using? For example: “Preneed” is a very “inside baseball” term. Families do not search for this because they have no idea what this word means. Think about what they would ask for instead.

Even better? Ask some members of your community what they would search for. This will give you a better overall understanding.

  • Run Advertising Campaigns

Digital advertising is not just about placing ads on websites anymore. That’s where it started, but the advertising industry is far more complex these days. Many firms now run search advertisements in their local markets to appear at the top of the results.

Here’s where you need to do your homework... do you know if your competitors are running ads? Your first step is to search for “funerals in [fill in city here]” and see what pops up. If you see your competitor at the top above the actual results, you’ll know your answer.

  • Create Unique Content

You are the only person in your market who knows exactly what differentiates your firm from your competitors. But does your website highlight these specific features and offerings? For example, if you have done some wonderfully unique services, why not list those examples of what you offer on one of your services pages? If you have it on your website, there’s a much bigger chance that someone who is searching for this type of service will find it — and then reach out to you for more information.

SEO is a long-term strategy, meaning you need to start as soon as possible if you want to see results. If you don’t know what you’re doing with SEO (and don’t have time to learn it or dedicate time to it), consider hiring someone who does.

Obit360 helps funeral homes create deeper connections and greater value from their websites.” Matt Powell, Tribute Technology’s Chief Technology Officer, added, “We’re seeing a fundamental shift in how families connect and grieve, and it’s happening online. In the first 48 hours after a death, more than 25% of all obituary traffic occurs, and that traffic is not passive. It drives condolence messages, flower orders, donations, even attendance. Obit360 was built to meet this moment: to turn every obituary into an engine of connection, compassion, and community, and to help funeral homes turn visibility into real-world impact.” Built for the Way People Engage Today Obit360 was designed using real user behavior, family feedback, and industry best practices. It introduces a clean, scrollable layout that places details all in one continuous view — no tabs or extra clicks required. With 70–80% of visitors arriving on mobile, the platform delivers a smooth, intuitive experience on any device while keeping the focus on the loved one being honored. Pages load 30% faster, rank higher in search results, and display sympathy gift options directly within the tribute — leading to a 60% increase in purchases. The straightforward design helps reduce confusion, minimizing support calls from families and guests. Real Results for Funeral Homes Firms using Obit360 report major improvements: obituary page visits have increased by 97%, condolence messages by 86%, and sympathy gift purchases by 60%.
