Protect Veterans from Scams
The Federal Trade Commission issued an alert this week warning veterans and their families not to fall for funeral-related scams.
Here’s what the government agency shared: “Scammers may contact you, saying that for a fee they can do the paperwork and guarantee what benefits you’ll get. Other scammers pretend to be from the VA. But the VA will never call, text, or email out of the blue and ask for your credit card or bank account information.”
This last sentence is key: The VA will not text, call, or email and ask for financial information.
If any families want help with applying for their benefits, there are VA-accredited individuals who can help. Click here to find the searchable list of approved providers.

Some ideas to consider using this information:
- Make sure there is a page specifically about veterans on your website.
- Consider sharing this reminder in an email newsletter to families.
- Create a Word document or PDF that can be easily shared with a family that links to these resources.
As a funeral home professional, you are their number one source of information – sharing resources like this will help you build even stronger relationships within your community.
