FTC Issues Warnings to Funeral Homes for Alleged Funeral Rule Violations
An Important Reminder for Deathcare Professionals
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has issued warning letters to 39 funeral homes following an undercover investigation that uncovered alleged violations of the Funeral Rule.
According to the FTC, several funeral homes failed to provide pricing over the phone, while others gave misleading or inconsistent information.
Funeral homes are required to:
✔ Provide accurate pricing over the phone upon request.
✔ Offer a General Price List (GPL) with itemized costs.
✔ Avoid misrepresenting laws about embalming and other services.
FTC staff conducted 250+ undercover calls and said they found:
- 38 funeral homes allegedly refused or provided conflicting pricing information.
- One firm reportedly claimed that embalming was legally required.
- Another failed to provide a proper GPL, offering only incomplete pricing details, according to the report.
Funeral homes must correct violations or risk fines of up to $51,744 per violation.
