Cremation Rates Expected to Rise Even More

The latest research from the National Funeral Directors Association predicts the U.S. cremation rate will rise from 60.5% this year to 81.4% by 2045. 


NFDA’s 2023 Cremation and Burial Report notes the following states will reach cremation rates of 80% or higher by 2035: 


  • Washington 
  • Nevada 
  • Oregon 
  • Montana 
  • Wyoming 
  • Colorado 


The report notes that the following factors motivated survey respondents to prefer cremation: 


  • Cost considerations – 54.4% 
  • Easier, simpler, more convenient option – 42.5% 
  • Personal preference or family traditions – 24.1%
